Born in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, Barbara Hepworth (1903-1975) is one of the most important artists of the 20th century. Studying at Leeds School of Art, Hepworth had an influential career spanning over fifty years. At the time, British sculpture and modernism was dominated by men.
This Barbara Hepworth Multiple is made from Portland stone with a slate base, and is inspired by Hepworth's Square with Two Circles outdoor sculpture at YSP. The sculpture stands on the Hillside at YSP near to Hepworth's The Family of Man series. The two circular apertures provide 'windows' to the landscape beyond.
Hepworth was keen for her work to be experienced in the open air. She wrote that her work should be ‘allowed to breathe’ outdoors. Hepworth described how she "kept on thinking of large works in a landscape: this has always been a dream in my mind".
The Multiple has been created by STIK DESIGNS, who are a small family run business, set up by Tuula Nicholson, one of Hepworth's granddaughters and her partner Shaun Robinson.
