Bharti Kher: Mimesis

Mimesis has been generously created and donated by Bharti Kher in support of her 2024 exhibition Alchemies, held at Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

The exhibition was Kher’s most extensive UK museum presentation to date and was highly ambitious in size and scope. The exhibition centres the female body and explores transformative potential in a display that brings together intimate works in light-filled gallery spaces with monumental sculpture in the landscape. Alchemies ignited imaginations and brought Kher’s work to a new and diverse audience, shaping meaningful and inspirational encounters.

Mimesis is a small limited edition of bindis on paper with a mix of lithograph and silkscreen techniques. The bindis are applied by hand on the paper.

This limited edition revisits Bharti Kher's famous series of bindis paintings, a captivating exploration of identity, femininity, and culture. By using thousands of bindis, small colored dots traditionally worn on the forehead in India, Kher creates vibrant and evocative artworks. Each bindi, with its own history and significance, becomes an essential element in the construction of her pieces. Through this series, the artist questions notions of diversity, connection, and transformation.
