Sarah Staton: Shucks, Sucks, Sticks, Stacks

'Shucks, Sucks, Sticks, Stacks', an exhibition of wooden sculptures by Sarah Staton, was held at Yorkshire Sculpture Park between July and September 2008. Mixing some entirely constructed pieces with others that were compounds of parts of pre-existing objects, it displayed her interest in colour and expressed a loyalty to modernist notions of sculpture and design. Staton's sculptures, which are made from woord turned on a lathe, are intended to be shown outdoors, although not among the treet or shrubs to which they owe their forms.

Staton understands that almost everything has a potential, even the most abject forms and disregarded objects. Everything is abstract, everything is a figure from one sort or another. This volume is a limited edition, signed by the artist, version of a book published to coincide with that exhibition that includes many brilliant colour photographs Staton's work. Also included is an essay by Adrian Searle, exploring the reason for Staton's work and the interesting use of material and colour everpresent in her work. Staton's work exists in a world that conflates design and art history, formal sculptural values, taste and fashion. It is a deliberate hybrid, playing on ideas of modernism and taste and subverting those idioms, while simultaneously paying them respect; this book will intrigue its readers into questioning everything they think they know about modern sculpture.
