Simon Armitage Poet Laureate Sherry: Cream

As part of his appointment as the UK’s twenty-first Poet Laureate, YSP Trustee, Simon Armitage travelled to Spain to meet sherry makers in the bodegas of Jerez.

In keeping the long literary tradition of gifting the Poet Laureate a “butt of sack” (a barrel of sherry), a custom dating back to the seventeenth century, Armitage was following in the footsteps of poets such as John Dryden, Ted Hughes and Carol Ann Duffy. Armitage selected three varieties of sherry: Cream, Amontillado and Fino.

All are bottled using exclusive labels featuring an illustration of a cuckoo drawn by Susan Roberts. The cuckoo is the symbolic bird of the village of Marsden where Armitage grew up and where so many of his poems are rooted. The reverse of the label features a dialect poem of his, The Phoenix, telling a version of the cuckoo story.
